1. MAISON CRIVELLI
SHOP MAISON CRIVELLI
Thibaud Crivelli draws inspiration for scent from his childhood, where he lived partially in France and partially in Asia. Maison Crivelli’s perfumes are unique in their lack of usual chemical additives, formulated without phthalates and colourants, and created using only the finest raw ingredients. The company also prides itself on a sustainable approach that sees it use plastic-free, recyclable packaging, as well as supporting the Cœur de Forêt association, which promotes the sustainable production of patchouli in India.
2. 2787 BARCELONA
SHOP 2787 BARCELONA
Born in Berlin, Romy Kowalewski became fascinated with fragrance as a teenager and launched her brand 2787 Barcelona after graduating from university. Inspired by her own experiences as a millennial, Kowalewski launched her line for the modern generation, lending a playful and free-spirited slant to each scent she releases. Packaged in sleek, minimalist bottles, 2787 Barcelona features four collections: Now, for the everyday; Wild, for occasions; Go, for those who enjoy daring scents; and Calm, for those who enjoy something milder.
3. MAISON MATINE
SHOP MAISON MATINE
Launched in November 2019, Maison Matine is a Parisian fragrance house founded by Arthur Ponroy and Marie Kellou. The word ‘matine’ references both the French word ‘mutine’, meaning rebellion, as well as ‘matin’, translating to morning – paying homage to the brand’s philosophy of being daring every day. Accessibly priced and playfully packaged, Maison Matine aims to appeal to moods, not ages, breaking boundaries as it goes. The brand signs its logo off with the phrase ‘Beyond Paris’, a reference to its global inspirations.
4. HERMETICA
SHOP HERMETICA
The brainchild of John and Clara Molloy – in collaboration with perfumer Aliénor Massenet – French brand Hermetica was launched with an innovative new vision for fragrance. Encased in sleek, recycled-glass bottles, Hermetica scents are vegan, alcohol-free, infused with moisturising ingredients and contain SPF, making them perfect for even the most sensitive of skin types. The name is derived from corpus hermeticum, a collection of mystical texts that influenced the practice of alchemy in the Middle Ages, and references the brand's experimental approach.
5. D.S. & DURGA
SHOP D.S. & DURGA
Founded by a musician and an architect, D.S. & Durga had unconventional beginnings as a niche fragrance brand in New York. Helmed by husband and wife David and Kavi Moltz, the duo opened their store downtown in Brooklyn in 2007. Both reject the concept of a signature scent, believing that fragrance should be worn according to mood and whim, as a complement to one’s wardrobe. D.S. & Durga is influenced primarily by culture – music, literature, art, travel and history – capturing fragmented memories in its intoxicating vegan scents.
6. NASOMATTO
SHOP NASOMATTO
Italian perfumer Alessandro Gualtieri began his fragrance line Nasomatto after travelling to Sharjah and becoming fascinated with the ancient art of perfume-making. After exploring the regions of Oman, India and Saudi Arabia, collecting inspiration as he went, the brand was finally launched in 2007 – its name means ‘crazy nose’ in Italian. Nasomatto shrouds itself in secrecy by declining to reveal the fragrance notes, instead only offering an abstract description of the scent to tantalise the wearer’s imagination.
7. ORMAIE
SHOP ORMAIE
Ormaie was founded in late 2018 by mother-and-son duo, Marie-Lise Jonak and Baptiste Bouygues, who sought to create a fragrance brand that was both natural and sustainable. One of the most visually striking aspects about Ormaie is its unique bottles, each of which has been created from recycled glass and crowned with a hand-carved wooden topper. All seven scents in the collection are vegan and made from all-natural ingredients; some of them have personal sentiment. Yvonne was named for Jonak’s mother, while Le Passant was inspired by Bouygues’ father.
8. INITIO PARFUMS
SHOP INITIO PARFUMS
Launched in 2015, Initio Parfums was named after the Latin word ‘initio’, meaning ‘the origin’, and shrouds itself in intrigue surrounding its scents and their creation. The company’s artistic director, known only as Sonia, has collaborated with some of world’s most famous names in perfumery, creating highly intoxicating and one-of-a-kind perfumes with a powerful olfactory force. Encased in elegant, display-worthy black bottles, Initio features two main collections – The Absolutes and The Magnetic Blends – that are designed to be mix and matched for your own unique fragrance.
