NICOLA FERRARI Monte Santoccio Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016
18.5 points “2016 Amarone Monte Santoccio is the real deal. This is a beautifully pliant and melodic red wine in fact it is almost Pinot-esque in its buoyancy and charm… Spice hints of leather a fanfare of bitter red fruit discreet heat and skin rejoice and then senesce perfectly. This is a joyous experience and it finishes dry and noble – a vitally important part of this wine’s repertoire. So here you have it – an Amarone which does everything it should do and more and it costs a quarter of the price of the most famous name in town!” – Matthew Jukes
Monte Santoccio is a dynamic project from the famous Italian winemaker Nicola Ferrari. Ferrari built his reputation whilst working at the iconic winery Quintarelli but he and his wife Laura decided to start their own venture with the objective of having complete control over the winery vineyards and production. This they believe is required to obtain maximum quality.
Monte Santoccio Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is the producer’s top release and is only made in tiny volumes from four hectares of organic grapes. Composed of a varietal blend of Corvina Corvinone Rondinella Molinara Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon the grapes used were semi-dried for four months before being vinified and aged in oak for around 30 months. Commanding and intense on the nose this wine displays a wide array of complex aromas which include raisins coffee ripe plums vanilla jam balsamic and leather. The palate is incredibly weighty and very intense with a sweet richness and ripe fruit quality that coats the mouth and lasts long on the finish. Velvety warm and layered this excellent wine would make a comforting partner to rich game and red meat dishes or flavoursome cheese boards.
