“It is not the easiest variety in the world but if you tame the vines and don’t over crop it and pick it at the right time then Baga from Bairrada is probably the best terroir in Portugal.” – Dirk Niepoort
Although famed for the legendary Ports he and his family have made since 1842 Dirk Niepoort loves the grape variety Baga and the terroir of Bairrada. He has quietly been uncovering small parcels of old vines in the region and in 2012 bought Quinta de Baixo making it possible to create Lagar de Baixo on a larger scale. This passion project utilises biodynamic farming fermentation in traditional lagares (the stone troughs grapes are stomped in) carbonic maceration (like that used in Beaujolais) and maturation in old barrels creating an elegant red that will inevitably draw comparisons with Pinot Noir from Burgundy.
Light in colour and relatively low in alcohol yet immensely concentrated and buzzing with energy. Think juicy cherry tart raspberry wild strawberry spices perfume and fresh mint. But don’t think for too long as only 13 000 bottles were made and they never hang around for long. Consider pairing with game lentils sausage stews baked fish and light lunches in the sunshine.
