Introducing the celestial blaze…

Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. What makes them so exciting is Diageo’s unparalleled ability to cherry-pick anything from a lost barrel produced at a ‘ghost’ distillery to an experimental expression from a world-renowned brand. These are one-of-a-kind bottlings that are not to be missed…

Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones Harry Potter Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.

Apart from the classic 14 Year Old and the occasional Distillers Edition we seldom see new releases from this distillery which makes the Oban 10 Year Old Special Release 2022 one of the most exhilarating in this year’s line-up. It was inspired by the legend of a celestial creature that blazed across the black sky as this dram was being distilled filling the night with a vibrant violet brilliance. Aurora Borealis or magic rabbit? We don’t know but that purple quality seems to have seeped into the whisky. Undergoing a second maturation in ex-Sherry and Amontillado-seasoned casks it bursts with plum and blackberry. Of course there’s the notes of smoked salt seaweed lemon olive oil marzipan hot cross bun pine forests and granola that we love in Oban but the casks bring an all-new purple fruitiness and its youth delivers lots of warming pepper and hot chilli. We recommend enjoying it while looking up at the heavens but maybe consider a drop or two of water to quell that fiery 57.1% ABV.

Representing one of Scotland’s smallest but most well-known and loved distilleries Oban is situated on the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands. Its mild temperate climate warmed by the Gulf Stream sets it apart in a region known for its rugged natural beauty. The proximity to the coast lends Oban some of that salted character for which the Islands are renowned. The whisky itself owes its rich and rewarding Highland character to its very long fermentation process. The tiny lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills that make Oban’s Scotch are among the tiniest in Scotland and the liquor they distil is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs outside among the rooftops exposed to the salted sea air bringing a distinct depth of flavour said to go very well with salted caramel.
