Classic Albariño comes from Galicia but the weather in that wet northwest corner of Spain is temperamental and unreliable to say the least. So in the 1960s a winemaker called Jesús Requena brought some vines to the opposite corner of the country over near Valencia where the weather was much more stable and sunny. Pago de Tharsys took vines from that very first Albariño vineyard planted in the region of Utiel-Requena and they created their own tiny one-hectare plot (that’s about the size of a football pitch). From there they make the organic Vendimia Nocturna in minuscule quantities.
Vendimia Nocturna is so named because they harvest the grapes by hand in the middle of the night when the temperature is cool capturing all the heavenly aromatics. Heavily influenced by the Mediterranean the altitude and the warm sun during the day; the result is quite different from its friends in Rías Baixas. Expect exotic sun-kissed pineapple and mango tangy grapefruit and lime floral notes of jasmine acacia and white rose a creamy feel and a lick of something herbal and salty like samphire. This Albariño would make an exceptional partner to fruity Thai curries zingy Vietnamese salads Baja tacos jerk tofu with pineapple salsa Sri Lankan hoppers or fresh fish. Picked at night; best enjoyed in during the day preferably over long lazy lunches.
