El Valao Mencía comes from a small, family-run winery in Bierzo in Galicia. This is a stubborn and difficult place to tend vineyards. So, any wine made here is a labour of love. El Valao is crafted using grapes that were picked by hand from 90-year-old vines. It was aged in French oak for between six and eight months, adding spice to the red and wild berry fruit notes, and softening Mencía’s crisp acidity. We adore the depth of flavour here, with smoke, liquorice, balsamic and mint creating an intriguing red that will pair with anything from summer barbeques to winter comfort food.
