94 points “The wine is extremely balsamic and medicinal with an explosive nose with notes of white flowers but the nose changes as we know. What impressed me was the seamless structure and the harmony on the palate. It's titillating elegant detailed and nuanced with terrific balance. I was gobsmacked!” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Pazo Barrantes has become a flagship wine for the Rías Baixas region and the Albariño grape variety. Reliably brilliant every year which is saying a lot for an area of Spain renowned for its changeable vintages Pazo Barrantes Gran Vino Albariño is always surprisingly rich and powerful. But the 2019 also has a beautiful finesse to it thoroughly earning that huge score from Wine Advocate. Imagine pear sorbet a cocktail of tropical fruit white peach nectarine crunchy green apple orchard blossom fennel balsamic a little blanched almond and salted popcorn a splash of cream a pinch of dried herbs and a finish of pure sea spray. It’s glorious with seafood – think ceviche Baja tacos shrimp risotto and grilled sardines – but we also love it alongside a tofu version of fish and chips with nori to give that marine tang or even the fresh and spicy flavours of Vietnamese dishes.

Pazo Barrantes is the ancestral home of the Creixell family the owners of the legendary Rioja winery Marqués de Murrieta. Although famed for producing probably the greatest Spanish white wine ever created with Castillo Ygay White Gran Reserva Especial in Rioja they also own a little-known plot of old-vine Albariño in Rías Baixas. They had been making wine for generations from this 12-hectare vineyard in the Salnés Valley but they kept it to themselves. It wasn’t until around 1990 that they released it to the world. And we’re so glad they did.
