95 points “Another excellent portrait of this distinctive sub-region capturing all of the muscle of intense black fruits – a forging of blackberry black earth and blacksmith’s soot – without becoming too weighty. Tannins pull like a drawstring to control the mid-palate then finish with exquisite dryness. Its generous flavours will present seriously at the dining table.” – Decanter Magazine
We believe that this is the highest score that Decanter has ever awarded this wine making it a must-try vintage. This Shiraz grapes for Bin 150 are picked from vines grown on the ancient soils of Marananga in Barossa Valley. Although not really a household name in the UK this area is responsible for some of the region’s best-known wines. Crafted the traditional Penfolds way using a mix of new and old French and American oak it feels like the classic old Barossa that we all fell in love with. Chunky black cherry blackberry and raspberry fruit is bolstered by a combination of charcuterie and industry. So Italian sausage flecked with fennel seeds and peppery pâté mix with the heat and metal of the blacksmith’s forge the spice and toasty notes of the bakery and the freshly ground beans of the coffee house. There’s also a wee splash of soya sauce in the mix just to highlight that authentic Barossa feel. Each deeply comforting sip feels like reacquainting yourself with an old friend.
Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
