96 points “The 2020 vintage may have been responsible for brooding and concentrated wines, but I have found much to love in this year. This included. Sensational.” - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, July 2022

96 points “Striking as always, this is a very composed Bin 150 with impressive poise. Best from 2026.” - James Suckling, June 2022

Hailing from the ancient soils of the Marananga vineyard in the Barossa Valley, this sub-regional expression stands proudly with its complex, well balanced and polished delivery. The challenging climate of the Marananga region, with winter drought, low soil moisture levels, below average temperatures followed by rain when the grapes were just reaching ripeness, produced a very small crop but of extremely high-quality Shiraz. These grapes provided a deep rich backbone for this Bin where the contemporary style of the “Penfolds way” embraces the changing characteristics of challenging years such as these, but with the frame of a mix of oaks; French and American, old and new.

Delve into the deep dense core of this almost black vintage and breathe in the heart of the Barossa Valley. With roast duck, plum sauce, hoisin BBQ pork ribs, dusty granite powder, whetstone, exotic spice, star anise, cardamom and pimento your senses will be on overload – such complexity and history deriving from the ancient Marananga vineyards. The palate evolves to welcome satsuma, plums and boysenberries giving a nod to the varietal and regional signature. Developing alongside the fruity tones you will also find freshly sawn oak, rye sourdough toast, pumpkin seeds, sarsaparilla, black cardamom and gentle nutmeg spice brought together in a tightly structured frame by the ripe and rich tannins. This restrained but intense and bold wine can still improve with age so whether you want to drink now or store for later, you will not be disappointed with this sensational Shiraz.

Penfolds is certainly Australia’s, and possibly one of the world’s, most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844, it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine, Penfolds Grange, which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert, their winemaker, who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative, often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
