The Cellar Reserve range is where the winemakers at Penfolds get experimental exploring unusual grape varieties and creating innovative new styles. So these limited-edition reds are some of the most exciting wines to come out of Australia.

We’ve curated three of our favourites from the range two from McLaren Vale and one from Barossa Valley. The experts at Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate describe 2018 as an “extraordinary” vintage in South Australia rating it more highly than any other since their records began. That makes this triumvirate of reds very special indeed. We’ve slipped a corkscrew and an aerating pourer into the box to take your experience to the next level.

The first in the line-up is a single-vineyard Tempranillo creating a unique expression of a Spanish grape variety grown in Australia. Alongside the usual berry and spice character you’d expect it has an intriguing savoury side (think roasted root vegetables bay and black olives) plus an unexpected tang (akin to rhubarb raspberry and crab apple jelly). Next up is a Barossa Valley twist on the much-loved Tuscan grape Sangiovese. With all that hot sunshine this is much richer than its Italian counterparts displaying Christmas cake cherry chocolate liqueur roasted nut and black olive tapenade notes. And finally we have a 100% Grenache. Penfolds tends to blend this variety with Shiraz and Mourvèdre so it’s thrilling to taste it in its pure form. Silky cherry and succulent cranberry combine with an array of exotic herbs and peppery spices plus a vegetal edge reminiscent of honey-roasted beetroot and carrots. It’s an exhilarating collection and something very different from the classic Penfolds bottlings.

Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
