96 points “A very intense and ripe expression of dark-cherry plum and raspberry aromas here with some chocolate-powder and cedar-oak inflections all nicely matched to the rich sumptuous fruit. The palate has a very plush smooth-honed and dense feel with fine layers of tannins that gather weight and power on the finish. Deceptively long with a wrap of dark toasted spice around rich blackberries. Delicious now but best from 2026.” – James Suckling

The Magill Estate is where Penfolds all began. This single urban vineyard was first established in 1844 and the 100% Shiraz grown here only goes into the Magill Estate Shiraz and Grange. A contemporary wine that’s created the traditional way (handpicking open fermenters basket pressing and matured in barrels) it feels like you are tasting the progression of the Australian wine industry in this one single bottle. Black cherry blackberry elderberry nutty praline raspberries and cream spices toffee peppery biltong chocolate-coated figs ginger cola bottles rose petals and cranberry; it’s truly beguiling stuff and quite different from the rest of the Penfolds range.

Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
