Barolo Cesare 17
95 points, “Plenty of blackberry and black cherry on the nose with violet and lavender undertones. Full-bodied with powerful tannins that flow across the palate. Ever enveloping and imposing, yet polished and impressive.” – James Suckling
94+ points, “The most traditional and classic of the wines in this important portfolio, the 2017 Barolo is packaged in a retro label that speaks to all the grandeur of this important Italian wine appellation. The wine imparts delicate and fine tones of wild fruit, cassis, tar, smoke and crushed rose. The wine is buttoned up and straitlaced, especially now in its youth.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
This wine was released to mark a happy occasion and a sad one. The former was the 140th anniversary of the historic house of Pio Cesare, and the latter was the death of the Piedmont pioneer, Pio Boffa. As ever, this is a rich and complex Barolo. Expect sweet cherry, wild strawberry, tangy raspberry, darker blackberry and blackcurrant, spiced chocolate, summer flowers and a gentle whiff of freshly laid tarmac, still smoking on the road. We can’t get over how silky and elegant this, and can’t wait to pair it with truffles, wild porcini mushrooms, game or slow-cooked beef.
Pio Cesare was established in 1881 and was run by the fifth generation of the family, Pio Boffa, until 2021, when he sadly passed away after succumbing to Covid-19. His daughter, Federica, has now taken over the business and carries on her father’s legacy with passion and determination. As one of the first producers to truly start shouting about the immense potential of the Piedmont region’s wines and one of the first to export to the UK, Pio Cesare has always been an industry leader. And as Wine Advocate quite rightly notes: “You have to love the energy and dynamic thinking that comes out of this historic cellar located in the city centre of Alba.”
