92 points “A bouquet of fresh sweet strawberry cherry Tuscan spice box dusty florals and hints of mint lift from the glass. On the palate soft textures flood the senses offset by tart red fruits minerals and spice as the 2018 seems to hover – well poised almost weightless yet still fully satisfying.” – Antonio Galloni

Don’t be fooled by the Rosso di Montalcino status this is practically a Brunello di Montalcino. The grapes used to create it are of the highest quality and any other estate would use them to create a rather fine Brunello. Brunello di Montalcino requires almost five years of total ageing including at least two in oak and four months in bottle. Poggio di Sotto’s Rosso receives two years in oak and six months in bottle but it’s released a little earlier and vinified in stainless steel. However the result easily rivals some of the greatest Brunello di Montalcinos. Brimming with cassis foraged raspberries dried strawberries herbs spices and cedar; this is a simply phenomenal wine.

Although only established in 1989 Poggio di Sotto has quickly risen into Brunello di Montalcino’s elite. Located just outside the town of Castelnuovo dell’Abate in the southern part of the region this is an estate that has ignored passing trends and played the long game by carving out their own style all the while amassing a cult following along the way. The grapes are grown high on the hills above the Orcia River Valley. Cooled by breezes from the Monte Amiata (an ancient volcano) the fruit creates the most wonderfully aromatic reds. Dare we say it almost Burgundian. Employing large oval barrels made of Slavonian oak by a Venetian cooper they’re able to achieve immensely long maturation periods without the wines oxidising becoming reductive and losing their vibrancy and finesse. This is a bewitching Brunello di Montalcino producer.
