Vranken-Pommery Monopole first started producing English sparkling wine in 2014 in collaboration with local Hampshire wine makers and was the first wine to be sold by a Champagne group under the Louis Pommery England brand and continues to do so. The operation is overseen by Clément Pierlot, who has been director of Vranken-Pommery’s vineyards since 2004 and is also Pommery’s chef de cave.
This English Brut presents a beautifully smooth and dangerously moreish glass of bubbles. It’s crisp and taut with good acidity, but also some attractive toasty depth and combines lemony fruit with some riper apple notes and a very fine texture, with hints of bread, honeycomb and almonds. But the dominant feature here is the lovely taut, pure fruit. Impressive stuff.
