Barbaresco Produttori 16

95 points, “The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and liquorice aromas.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

95 points, “Enticing aromas of violet, woodland berry, loose vineyard soil, wild mint and a hint of spearmint shape the intensely fragrant nose. The tense, young palate is still nervous but already boasts finesse, showing wild raspberry, crunchy red cherry, white pepper and star anise. Firm, refined tannins and racy acidity give it a linear, almost austere elegance, while bright acidity keeps it focused and balanced.” – Wine Enthusiast

94 points, “The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can't remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol, liquorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine!” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

Produttori del Barbaresco is one of Piemonte’s shining beacons. As well as producing nine Barbaresco Riservas from specific vineyards on historical sites, they also create a cracking Barbaresco D.O.C.G., which has to be one of Italy’s best value reds. The grapes are come from 54 different growers and the wine is aged in large oak casks for two years. It’s a wine that will drink beautifully for the next three decades, especially when it comes from a vintage as good as 2016.

Jancis Robinson noted that “Piemonte produced excellent quality wine in 2016, with ripeness to match the very good 2015, but firmer tannin and higher acidity.” Wine Advocate rated it as an “outstanding” vintage, in fact, placing it on a par with 2010 and 2006. This one is Ovello. The fruit was grown by eleven different families and it’s classic Barbaresco at its very best.

In the words of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Produttori del Barbaresco “has been making terrific wines for five decades.” All of the leading critics agree; Jancis Robinson believes that they “helped to establish Barbaresco as a top-quality wine”, James Suckling places them at “the top of the pack”, and Antonio Galloni considers their wines “reference-points”. Known affectionately as simply Produttori, this is one of the world’s top cooperatives and is virtually synonymous with the region. And the reason for that is because they offer some of the very best value for money to be discovered anywhere in Italy. Established in 1894, Produttori now encompasses around 50 families over some 100 hectares, making nothing but the finest Nebbiolo.
