The components for Select Aged 151 Green Label were shipped to the Royal Navy victualling yards in Deptford Gosport and Devonport for blending each one having spent a minimum of three years in a charred ex-Bourbon barrel. These were combined to a recipe much like the one that would have been served for the last time when the Royal Navy discontinued its daily ration of rum on 31 July 1970. It was bottled at an exceptionally high “cask strength” which is pretty much the same strength that the components would have arrived at the UK. Apart from its potency what makes this 100% Demerara overproof rum so special is that one of the main components came from the Port Mourant still – the legendary double wooden pot still at the Diamond Distillery in Guyana.
We thought that Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum was potent but this is the weight-lifting older sibling. Expect unparalleled richness and notes of vintage marmalade hot cross bun tobacco in a leather pouch and the fruit and marzipan combo of Christmas cake. Although it’s a super-smooth rum we’d still recommend mixing a spirit bottled at 75.5% ABV. Proceed with caution and maybe try it diluted with a few drops of water or an ice cube. This will help to open it up and show the full extent of the aromas and flavours. Alternatively add your favourite mixer or slip it into a classic cocktail.
Pusser’s (whose fine spirits have been described by Forbes as the “Single Malt of Rum”) takes its name from a mispronunciation of ‘purser’ – the ship’s supply officer who would give out the daily tot of rum.
