Biodynamic orange wine fermented in a mix of amphora and stainless steel then matured in oak for eight months resulting in nutty roasted peach apricot nectar burnt orange rind dried wildflower and Negroni-esque flavours. The award for the coolest wine of the year clearly goes to… Pyramid North Canterbury Orange.
Orange wines have been one of the hottest trends in the wine business for several years now. For those not familiar with the style these are white wines that are created by leaving the juice in contact with the grape skins for longer giving it time to extract a little more body tannin and flavour and to take on that wonderful amber colour. Or in this case an almost luminous copper-coloured hazy hue.
Pyramid Valley was taken over by the Master of Wine Steve Smith (a legend in the New Zealand wine game who has worked at Villa Maria and Craggy Range) and Brian Sheth (an American businessman) in 2017. North Canterbury Orange is one of their bestselling wines. Crafted using 98% Pinot Gris with a splash of Muscat and Gewürztraminer its texture is just phenomenal. Great with food but also just wonderful in lieu of a pre-dinner cocktail.
