90 points “The little brother of the wonderful Quinta do Vale Meão Estate Tinto this report this is a scaled-back version in most respects while keeping many echoes of what is good. The fruit profile retains beautiful concentration of fruit. The texture is still caressing and the tannins are ripe. It is quite graceful as well. Unlike its big brother though this also shows off a nice price point.” – Wine Advocate
Named after the massive detour the Douro takes around Quinta do Vale Meão’s vineyards Meandro is a spectacular wine for its price. A blend of Port grape varieties – Touriga Franca Touriga Nacional Tinta Roriz and a handful of other – that are trodden by foot fermented in steel and then matured in French oak for 14 months. 2016 was an outstanding vintage which has given Meandro a wonderful tannic structure rich red fruit sweet spice and magical floral notes that provide a surprising lightness. The freshness makes it extremely food friendly particularly with red meat slow-cooked tomato-based dishes hearty stews and comfort food.
In 1877 Antónia Adelaide Ferreira – who owned the largest winemaking estate in the Douro – bought a huge plot of empty land. Her dream was to create a new vineyard from scratch. Alas she died before she could see her investment come to fruition. Although the estate passed down through Dona Antónia’s descendants the grapes were sent to Ferreira to produce some of its finest wines. But in 1998 Francisco Javier de Olazabal broke away from the family business to dedicate himself to making wines under the Quinta do Vale Meão label. It has now become one of the leading estates in the Douro and all the wines are meet with huge critical acclaim; Antónia Adelaide Ferreira would have been proud.
