97-99 points “The combination of lots of fruit lots of power and endless flavour to go with the endless finish mean that this is a rather stunning follow-up to recent vintages.” – Wine Advocate
For those quick enough to react and bag a bottle Quinta do Vesuvio is an absolute steal from the 2017 vintage. Although 1 200 cases were made these are rapidly disappearing from the marketplace. Located on the south bank and with vineyards rising to 500 metres above sea level Quinta do Vesuvio benefitted from a slightly cooler aspect during this hot vintage. This has given the wine a fabulous freshness to balance its muscly power and fleshy texture. Dark black fruit is laced with fiery ginger and pepper but a cooling wind of mint rose and acidity blows through it. What a wine and at around half the price of its sought-after sibling (Capel da Quinta do Vesuvio) it really is phenomenal value for money.
The yields in 2017 for Port were very low but the quality of the wine was immensely high. According to Wine Advocate they offer “old-school power concentration freshness lifted fruit and vivid flavours. The only vintage in the last decade that competes with it is 2011.” This is high praise considering that 2011 is the highest rated year ever for Vintage Port according to Wine Advocate. It’s that freshness that makes this such a great vintage and explains why so much of it was snapped up immediately during a hard-fought En Primeur campaign. Demand for these cases will be immense so don’t expect them to hang around for long.
The Symington family acquired the historic and picturesque Quinta do Vesuvio 30 years ago. Although they’ve made significant investment in this prestigious estate things are still done very traditionally with 50 treaders employed to stomp the grapes in granite lagares. Established in 1565 Quinta do Vesuvio boasts some of the finest terroir in Douro and shouldn’t be missed by Port lovers. The Symington family compare the 2017 vintage to 1945 widely considered to be one of the greatest vintages the region has ever seen. And they should know what they are talking about because not only are they the world’s leading producer of premium Port but they are also the biggest vineyard owner in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty.
