Although more famed for their Port Ramos Pinto were one of the original pioneers of high-quality wine in the Douro. Although they remain somewhat under the radar for now their wines are some of the finest coming out of Portugal today. And that shouldn’t come as a surprise considering that this legendary house has now come under the stewardship of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Champagne Louis Roederer Domaines Ott Champagne Duetz Maison Delas and of course Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. With a rich history like Ramos Pinto’s and the provenance and know-how of their owners any new release is an intriguing prospect…

So we’re excited to unveil the inaugural vintage of Quinta de Ervamoira Douro Red. Shaped like an amphitheatre this vineyard in the Douro Superior sub-region has UNESCO World Heritage status and is packed with wonderful old vines. Many consider it the birthplace of modern Douro viticulture. This rich ripe and full-bodied red wine will only be made in extraordinary years. The summer of 2018 was hot and the classic varieties like Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca thrived especially the old vines whose roots penetrate deep and were able to find water. The grapes were gently trodden by foot in the traditional manner before being fermented in granite lagares. The wine was aged in French oak for 18 months and then left to mature for a further year in the bottle.

Despite the hot summer Quinta de Ervamoira possesses a surprising elegance and freshness perfectly displaying the skill of Ramos Pinto’s winemaker João Luís Baptista. Enormously aromatic and complex the wine is silky smooth on the first sip then seems to grow in volume resonating with plum crumble morello cherry and wild thyme. It’s always exhilarating to taste a first from such a prestigious producer and we can’t wait to pair this with a Sunday roast; sausage chestnut rosemary and fennel seed pasta; or maybe something made with smoky aubergine.
