This spirit’s journey begins with the multi-award-winning Ramsbury Single Estate Gin*. Possibly the finest base for a sloe gin imaginable it is crafted using their own Horatio and Spotlight wheat and nine botanicals including juniper cinnamon liquorice orris root dried lemon peel dried orange peel coriander and angelica. However the most important addition is fresh quince which is also grown and harvested on the farm in Wiltshire. This full-bodied and summery gin is then infused with wild sloes foraged from the hedgerows and woodland that surround their fields. Tart and tangy red fruit combines with notes of wildflower meadows long grass woody spices juicy quince pepper and pine. Sip it neat with a cheeseboard slip it into a glass of fizz mix up a Sloe Negroni cocktail or top it with tonic or bitter lemon.
Ramsbury Estate’s success can be attributed to the complete control they have over their environmentally conscious ingredients. Using chalk-filtered water from their own well and the finest Horatio and Spotlight wheat harvested at optimal golden ripeness they handcraft this premium spirit in their state-of-the-art biomass-heated distillery. Any spent grain is fed to their cows waste water is filtered through a sustainable reed bed into a picturesque lake teeming with wildlife and once bottled the gin is served at the bar of their pub – itself the winner of the AA Hospitality Pub of the Year England 2017-2018 – alongside beer from their brewery and meats from the estate’s smokehouse.
