OXO Tower musician Laura Vasiliou answers our questions
When she’s not touring with Craig David or Ed Sheeran, incredible OXO vocalist Laura V is one half of Aurora! Our very own ‘Heavenly Southbank Soul Jazz duo’ tells us more about her musical life.
Where are you from and how did you come to be in London?
I was born in Brixton, South East London, but moved to Surrey when I was 9 years old. I was fortunate enough to start recording music at that very same age, and I was always in central London so it’s a place that I love!
How would you describe your music?
I would describe the music that I play at the Oxo Tower as pop, jazz and soul. I work alongside a wonderful guitarist James Manders, who enables me to express my music very freely. We complement one another and have been able to recreate that live lounge atmospheric vibe that London’s BBC Radio 1 has made so famous.
What artists inspire you (past or present)?
Growing up, I listened to everything from Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye and Prince to Sammy Davis Jr, Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan. I also have such a strong connection to Reggae music; my very first manager Danny Sim used to own Bob Marley’s catalogue, and every time I walked into his office in Kensington, Bob was playing in the background!
From the greats to the lates, I’m a fan!
Career highlights to date?
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some of the most amazing artists thus far, but my two favourite moments in the last 18 months would have to be… performing as a backing vocalist for Craig David at Glastonbury Festival. Jumping around on the Pyramid stage looking out at the audience was an epic moment! The vibe was indescribable!
The other would be performing at the Brit awards with Ed Sheeran, just because it’s something so close to the heart of London’s music scene. Both of these artists have been so pivotal in terms of their contribution to London and its iconic music culture.
What do you love about London?
What I love most about London are the views, particularly the one from the Oxo Tower! Everyone loves that classic picture with St Paul’s in the background.
London has some of the most timeless architecture (not to mention history) in the world, and when you’re fortunate enough to work there so often, those treasures get overlooked. Walking around the South Bank in the summer is the best, too. The river and the classic red telephone box always make me smile.
What do you love about the OXO Tower?
The views are incredible, but the food is just amazing! The salmon dish is my absolute favourite!
What’s your sartorial style?
I adore classic cut dresses, killer heels and red lipstick, of course!
What is your favourite drink?
I don’t often drink alcohol, BUT you have to try the Mojito at the Oxo Tower! You should ask Thierry to make you one.
What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?
Black Prada killer court shoes!
