95 points “The Castello Romitorio 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a suave and supple expression that shows a slightly more opulent texture compared to many of its peers.” – Wine Advocate

95 points “A dense and rich Brunello.” – James Suckling

95 points “On the palate it's soft enveloping almost creamy in texture and offset by a mix of savoury spice fine tannin and saturating mineral tones as black cherry and sage seem to hover on the senses.” - Vinous

The results are in and Romitorio’s exquisite Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a winner. This isn’t a shock their wines are always spectacular and 2015 was a fabulous vintage for the region – described by the experts at Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by critic James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”.

Full-bodied opulent and rich and creamy in texture it fills the mouth with vibrant cherry wild strawberries cornflowers spices dried herbs gamey meat sage vanilla mocha and forests after the rain. Although already startlingly impressive given more time it will become increasingly leathery and herbal. This red promises to be truly exceptional. Definitely one for the cellar.

The imposing Castello Romitorio sits high on the hill in front of Montalcino. During its long history which dates right back to Roman times it has been a temple a prison a fortress a monastery a castle a ruin a manor house a shelter for shepherds and most recently an art studio and winery. Once owned by a patron of the arts called Giorgio Franchetti it was swapped with the artist Sandro Chia for some of his paintings. A leader of the Neo-Expressionist movement in Italy and a contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat Chia used the castle as a studio. Also inspired by the winemaking revolution occurring in Brunello di Montalcino during the late 1980s he was at the forefront of the region’s rebirth. Now an internationally recognised winery Sandro and his son Filippo create elegant classic and sought-after Sangiovese of the highest calibre.
