La Hechicera – pronounced etch-ee-she-rah – means “enchantress” and it’s impossible not to fall for this Colombian’s charms. Especially so with the second release in their new series of experimental creations that explore the intriguing story of this exciting rum producer…

There are very few privately produced premium rums from Colombia so anything from La Hechicera is a rare treat. Serie Experimental No.2 is a true one-of-a-kind and is unlikely to ever be repeated. As well as making rum the Riascos family have been banana growers for three generations. So they’ve taken rum matured in white oak casks for between 12 and 21 years and then gently infused it with a generous amount of banana flesh. Before steeping them the Organic Fair Trade non-GMO Gros Michel bananas were dried in the sun further intensifying the fruit flavour.

Unpeel this slightly hazy rum to discover aromas of rich toffee rainforests vanilla gentle smoke honeyed granola with dried tropical fruit and of course banana skin and overripe banana flesh. Take a mouthful and you’ll be met by flambéed banana roasted plantain allspice marmalade salted caramel marzipan spiced chocolate Scandi liquorice and a long oaky finish. The banana flavour has been judiciously meted out so as to enhance and not overpower the incredible rum so expect immense richness rather than a flavoured-style rum. And with only 15 000 bottles of this highly collectable rum released worldwide it’s sure to be in high demand especially considering its beautiful blue wax seal rainforest motif and hand-numbered bottle. We know that we’re going bananas for it.

La Hechicera was created by the Riascos family in Barranquilla wedged between the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea in the most biodiverse nation on the planet. Their Maestro Ronero Giraldo Mituoka Kagana is the son of a Japanese immigrant who started his career cutting sugar cane for the Cuban revolution and is clearly a master of his art.
