Ron La Progresiva de Vigia Mezcla 13 Cuban Dark Rum is quite the mouthful in both name and flavour. So let’s pick it apart to explain…

Ron is of course the Cuban name for rum and this is one of the country’s very best. Next up there’s ‘progresiva’ and this certainly lives up to that progressive moniker because it’s crafted by two female rum maestros amid what is sadly still a very male-dominated industry. Ron La Progresiva is made by The Island Rum Company (two Norwegians and a Spaniard) who went into partnership with the Cuban government allowing them access to the legendary rum brand Vigia. Vigia was usually reserved for visiting heads of state and the elite of the island – apparently Barack Obama received a bottle when he dropped by. Bodega Vigia overlooks Havana and the Straits of Florida and is located next door to Finca Vigia where Ernest Hemingway lived while writing many of his greatest works and presumably enjoying a cocktail or two. This brings us to Mezcla 13. Mezcla has nothing to do with Mezcal it translates as ‘mix’ or ‘blend’. Apparently it was the thirteenth  iteration that made the final cut but this sipping rum also roughly has an average age of about 13 years being a blend of three components aged in ex-Bourbon barrels for 11 13 and 15 years respectively. The sugarcane comes from the red soils of Ciego de Ávila in central Cuba a region renowned for the quality richness and sweetness of its molasses.

That treacly goodness comes through in the rum along with a complex mixture of pineapple toffee apple banana crème caramel popcorn chocolate-covered raisins Werther’s Original fig toasty oak marmalade and smoked chillies. As we said this phenomenal new rum is a bit of a mouthful.
