A glorious Port that tastes like an eruption of juicy blackberries ripe black cherries wild strawberries plum crumble and spiced cocoa. The tannins and fresh acidity are just screaming out for a cheeseboard. Sandeman’s Late Bottled Vintage 2016 is not to be missed.

The Touriga Franca Touriga Nacional Tinta Roriz Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão grapes that make up this LBV blend are picked by hand from premium sites in the Cima Corgo sub-region of the Douro including Quinta do Seixo and Quinta do Vau. The grapes are fermented in granite lagares with traditional foot treading to extract the perfect colour. It was then aged in oak tucked safely away in Sandeman’s historic cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia for around four years. It was bottled unfiltered to preserve the intensity of the flavour. A cool and damp start to 2016 meant lower yields but a heatwave in August created huge concentration in the fruit that remained. Sandeman’s winemaker Luís Sottomayor said “The degrees of complexity colour and structure make the 2016 Ports absolutely exceptional.”

In 1790 George Sandeman took a loan of £300 from his father to set up a Port and Sherry business in London. From those modest beginnings George created one of the world’s iconic wine brands. From Porto the company quickly diversified and bought Sandeman Bodegas in Jerez for Sherry production. A true innovator George Sandeman was the first one to brand all his Port pipes with GSC (George Sandeman & Co.) thus assuring provenance and quality. The brand was registered as a trademark in 1877 making it one of the oldest still in use. Following on the tradition of the house as innovators the now iconic figure of the “Don” was featured on Sandeman’s bottles as early as 1935.
