92 points “Mellow aromas of Asian pear butter-fried apple and a bit of canned pear show on the nose of this appellation blend. The compelling aspect is the grippy palate which is taut in a chalky tension that presents flavours of sea salt Pink Lady apple and red pear.” – Editors’ Choice at Wine Enthusiast
The 2019 Chardonnay from Santa Rita Hills is a stunning introduction to Sanford Winery one of America’s true greats. The grapes came from vines on the legendary Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada vineyards. These were barrel fermented and then the wine was aged for eight months in oak. The wine opens with a toasty nose followed by notes of apple pie lemon meringue poached pear grilled peach honeysuckle melon honeycomb and toasted hazelnuts before rounding out with a pinch of spice and sea salt. Bright elegant and deeply moreish it’s enough to make even the most devout of Burgundy worshippers reconsider their views on American Chardonnay.
Although many get their heads turned by Russian River Valley and the Carneros District some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay coming out of the United States is from Santa Barbara. And that all started with the pioneering Sanford Winery. Richard Sanford and Michael Benedict planted their first vineyard in 1971 and they unlocked the cool-climate Burgundian-style treasure trove that is Santa Rita Hills in the Santa Ynez Valley. In the mid-2000s Sanford Winery was bought by the Terlatos the family behind luxury brands including Two Hands Domaine Ramonet Peller Estates Mischief and Mayhem Champagne Lanson Chapoutier Kracher Idda Gaja Greystone Feudi di San Gregorio Chateau de la Tour Nonino Angostura Caribbean Rum Bunnahabhain Ledaig Tobermory Amarula and many more. Joining an iconic roster like that Sanford is a producer that needs to be firmly on any fine wine connoisseur’s radar.
