Savage Grace’s Dineen Vineyard Côt 2017 was an Editors’ Choice in Wine Enthusiasts Top 100 Wines of 2018. The highly respected magazine urged its readers to “put it on the dinner table to see it shine.” It was also featured in Decanter Magazine's Most Exciting Wines of 2019 receiving a score of 94 points.
It’s Malbec Jim but not as we know it. This unusual red has been described by Wine Advocate as “definitely a wine for those willing to embrace the unconventional.” So if you are looking to explore the far reaches of wine’s galaxy then look no further.
Grown in the Rattlesnake Hills of Yakima Valley this Malbec is a far cry from the blockbuster beasts of Argentina. Savage Grace’s use of the French name for Malbec – “Côt” – tells us that this American wine is something a little different. Many believe the name Côt originated in northern Burgundy and this red certainly has more in common with Burgundian Pinot Noir or the rare Malbecs of the Loire Valley than it does with its South American compadres.
Juicy and crunchy it’s packed with delicate notes of cherry raspberry blueberries plum potpourri tarragon and pepper not to mention oodles of rustic charm. Dineen Vineyard Côt is the kind of food-friendly wine that goes with just about anything from oven roasted salmon to bangers and mash but for us this glorious red has barbeque season and al fresco lunches written all over it.
Washington State’s Savage Grace Wines was established in 2011 by winemaker Michael Savage and his wife Grace Hearn but the name is far more than just a clever play on their names. It reflects the vines’ struggle to survive here in this wild northwest corner of America and the elegance that Michael manages to tease out of them. His aim is to craft wines in an Old World style with lower alcohol using sustainable farming methods. These boutique wines are super rare with only 100-or-so cases of some of them in existence. Savage Grace also uses natural yeasts and very little sulphur producing wines that are vegan-friendly.
