98 points “The name the magnum and the alcohol level all suggest a full-bodied wine dripping with extract of fruit tannins and oak. Yet it is none of those things; it is elegant perfectly balanced its black cherry/blackberry fruits with a finely pitched savoury edge. A superb wine.” – James Halliday
96 points “This is a whopper with a huge future ahead of it.” – Huon Hooke The Real Review
96 points “A nod to the traditional full-bodied Barossa Valley Shiraz style… Big delicious and balanced… Magnums only this is custom made for collectors and cellaring.” – James Suckling
St Hallett’s Mighty Ox 2018 was released for the Lunar New Year festivities in 2021. But it’s also a wine that promises such longevity that you could tuck it away to serve it in the next Year of the Ox. In Chinese culture the ox is a symbol of diligence persistence and honesty and the Mighty Ox Shiraz is just that – diligently crafted in an honest traditional Barossa style with a long and persistent finish. And it’s big like an ox because it has only been bottled in magnums which are perfect for serving at a feast.
Winemaker Helen McCarthy has created a real treat here using Shiraz grapes from Ebenezer Greenock and Moppa Hills in the Northern Barossa. Named after the great oxen that ploughed these ancient Australian soils the Mighty Ox has an immense intensity buzzing with vanilla Black Forest gateau blackberries crème de cassis earthy spices graphite liquorice engine oil and herby beef stock. That sweet and savoury combo makes it a fine choice to serve alongside everything from a Sunday roast to Chinese red cooking or spicy Sichuan cuisine.
St Hallett’s story begins with a family moving from Europe and setting up a butcher in Australia meanwhile planting their first vineyard. Established in 1944 and named after an explorer who wasn’t an actual saint they started by making fortified wines. The winery’s history has been a long and tumultuous one but it has now settled down to become one of the country’s most respected wine brands and most reliable sources of great value fine wine.
