STARWARD Two-Fold Double Grain Australian Whisky
Winner of Best Australian Blended Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards 2019 Starward’s Two-Fold is unpretentious versatile and easy to love. Sip it neat stir it into cocktails or mix it with tonic water as a radical and rebellious twist on a G&T.
Two-Fold gets its name from the duo of barley and grain used to create it. The first part is crafted using malted barley fermented with brewers’ yeast to create an extra fruity character. The second part of the base spirit comes from an aromatic and dry wheat. These two parts are matured separately in oak wine barrels that have held fruity Aussie reds like Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. To make sure the wine character is optimised they only use barrels sourced from within a day’s drive of the distillery. The barrels are filled at a slightly lower ABV so that the spirit will draw out all that red wine fruit from the oak. The two parts are then expertly married together creating a whisky brimming with red berries crème caramel flambéed pineapple buttery caramel custard pine and malted milk biscuits. Dangerously drinkable this will become your go-to for cocktails.
Produced at the New World Whisky Distillery in Victoria Starward is for the single malt connoisseur the adventurous explorer and the craft beer lover. As anyone who has visited Melbourne knows the cold currents from Antarctica and the hot desert winds that come across the mainland result in rapidly changing weather humidity and temperature. This causes the whisky within the barrels to mature rapidly and develop a deep colour meaning that Starward’s youngest whiskies become super smooth and are often mistaken for substantially older bottlings.
Free from the shackles of tradition David Vitale and his team are creating unique and world-beating Australian whisky in an urban distillery. Not only are they picking up World Whiskies Awards and medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition but they are putting the fun back into whisky.
