Portugal is so hot right now. The value for money and pure drinking pleasure coming out of this corner of the Iberian Peninsula is off the charts. Combine this with a showstopping magnum format a juicy Malbec-like taste and one of the world’s most respected winemaking families and you have Altano Douro Red. Wine critic Jancis Robinson has said that this red “improves with every vintage”. So as you might expect the 20th iteration from the 2018 vintage is a stunner.

The Symington family have been making wines in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty – since the 19th Century. They’re the world’s leading producer of premium Port the biggest vineyard owner in the region and one of the first wineries to start making serious Douro DOC wines. As the producers of Graham’s Dow’s Cockburn’s Warre’s and Quinta do Vesuvio they are obviously most famous for their Ports but the Altano wines they create are a revelation.

This blend of Touriga Franca Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca – classic varieties normally associated with Port – is grown in the hottest and driest area of the Douro. The result is an elegant and earthy wine jam-packed with silky chocolate dried flowers peppery spice juicy blackberry and plum crumble. It makes us want to fire up the barbeque or whack a lasagne in the oven immediately.
