If you love animals red wine and a considerable bargain then look no further than Altano Rewilding Edition Douro Red.

Firstly this version comes in a super-cool 2.25-litre Bag-in-Tube (that’s three bottles’ worth) which is not only far more stylish than a chunky Bag-in-Box but it’s also more easily recyclable and has a lower carbon footprint than glass. Saving the planet saves the animals. Secondly this phenomenal new wine gives money to Rewilding Portugal and the conservation of a 120 000-hectare wildlife corridor in the Greater Côa Valley. This means more eagles vultures lynx wolves deer and wild horses many of whom are critically endangered. It’s vegan friendly so there’s no weird animal bits used during the fining process. It’s certified minimum intervention viticulture which means it’s basically organic and is sustainably farmed in a manner that promotes biodiversity. It’s made by Symington Family Estates who are a B Corp which means they’re a company that puts people and the planet before profit. This is ‘save the world’ stuff even the cork has a note on it about carbon capture. We genuinely can’t think of a more forward-thinking wine than this one.

Altano Rewilding Edition Douro Red tastes like plum crumble ripe cherry wild strawberry dark chocolate studded with freeze-dried raspberry pieces and something that reminds us of Mariage Frères’ black teas with dried flowers in. Imagine Argentine Malbec made with a Burgundy-like elegance. When it tastes this good and also does so much good isn’t it time to rewild your wine rack?

The Symington family have been making wines in the Douro Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site of jaw-dropping beauty – since the 19th Century. They’re the world’s leading producer of premium Port the biggest vineyard owner in the region and one of the first wineries to start making serious Douro DOC wines. As the producers of Graham’s Dow’s Cockburn’s Warre’s and Quinta do Vesuvio they are obviously most famous for their Ports but the Altano wines they create are a revelation.
