It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Spicy, fresh and beautifully constructed, this has fine depth, better intensity of flavor and a backbone. The tannins are ripe, though. This wine from Quinta do Vesuvio (one of the greatest estates in the Douro Valley) is made using grapes grown on terraces around their dovecote – known as a ‘pombal’ in Portuguese. The Symington family acquired the historic, picturesque and remote Quinta do Vesuvio 30 years ago. Although they’ve made significant investment in this prestigious estate, things are still done very traditionally with 50 treaders employed to stomp the grapes in granite lagares. Established in 1565 Quinta do Vesuvio boasts some of the finest terroir in Douro and shouldn’t be missed by Port lovers and fans of big reds.
