Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Craig Wilson the 2021 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries as told by Scottish actors Siobhan Redmond and Lorne MacFadyen and the digital artist Ken Taylor. Fans of Game of Thrones and the accompanying whiskies will find much to love here.
We love young Talisker so we’re pretty happy that this rugged creature clambered out of the deep dark sea and across the beach. Talisker 8 Year Old Special Release 2021 comes from their smokiest reserves. The team tested the phenol levels in each barrel and chose only those with the highest readings. Super-smoky Talisker it doesn’t get much better than that. Imagine the fire-breathing serpent on the label attacking a spice-packing factory on the coast of Scotland somewhere. A wave of gravel seaweed salty spray and flames comes smashing down uprooting trees and turning the peat and the heather on the hillside into billowing bonfires. Amidst the smoke leaves earth timber and devastation of the decimated factory you can pick up flecks of black pepper chilli star anise vanilla burnt sugar and the fruitiness of pink peppercorns on the wind. But where are those peach and apple notes coming from? Were they mixing up herbal teas today? OK maybe we got carried away but it’s the kind of whisky that provokes a flight of fancy.
Hailing from Carbost on the Isle of Skye Talisker encapsulates the weather-beaten wildness and rural remoteness of its location. A perennial favourite amongst Single Malt enthusiasts Talisker’s full bodied smoky and complex character is as inimitable as it is alluring.
