“It’s an overwhelmingly sensual experience… the wine caresses the tongue with a texture like suede its flavours lingering ghostlike long after you’ve swallowed.” – David Williams The Observer
“The essence of Port: glorious and the last of its kind.” – Richard Mayson
Harvey Nichols is proud to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a 125-year-old Port.
As you would expect from a Port house founded in 1692 Taylor’s possess an unrivalled reserve of very old stocks maturing gracefully in cask in their historic cellars beneath Oporto. A couple of times in each generation the family decided to delve into that collection and launch a spectacular limited edition. For this latest release they have selected two casks of a Port produced in the magnificent pre-Phylloxera harvest of 1896. Only 1 700 bottles were made and we’ve managed to get our hands on just one precious bottle from this outturn.
1896 was the year that Taylor’s bought the legendary Quinta de Vargellas property making this a very special year for the house indeed. It was also an extremely hot vintage resulting in deeply coloured wines of exceptional power and immense ageing potential. These latter traits are important if you want to keep your Port for 125 years. Just as a reminder this is a wine from the 19th Century. It was made in the year that Queen Victoria became the longest reigning monarch in British history the first Summer Olympic Games were held Alfred Nobel died and bequeathed his wealth to fund the Nobel Prizes the Dow Jones Industrial Average was launched X-rays were discovered Ethiopia defended its independence from Italy the first Ford car was created and the first motoring fatality was recorded.
Liquid as rare and unique as this could only be bottled into a bespoke Scottish crystal decanter that was designed and hand blown exclusively for it packaged neatly into a luxurious cherrywood case. Very few will ever have tasted anything like Taylor’s Single Harvest Port 1896. Mahogany coloured with flashes of olive green this sensational Port is ready to drink now (no need for decanting). Serve lightly chilled and expect a rich and velvety wine with nuances of black coffee liquorice treacle leather cedarwood caraway mellow butterscotch orange zest crème brûlée rose petal eucalyptus pepper vanilla incense and a finish that continues to dazzle for what seems like an eternity. Taylor’s advise that the optimum drinking time after opening this fascinating bottle is two months so it’s something one can really linger over.
Robert Parker once described Taylor’s as “the Latour of Portugal” and it’s a very fitting description for such an iconic brand. Taylor’s is the archetypal Port house synonymous with this style of wine as proven by the Royal Warrant it holds as one of the Suppliers of Port Wine to Her Majesty The Queen. Although steeped in history as you would expect of a family-run business that has been leading the market for so long the forward-thinkers at Taylor’s are also committed to sustainable viticulture and have installed solar panels on three of their properties.
