Tesselaarsdal has a unique history one that remains as important today as it ever has. This small village 24km from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named after Johannes Tesselaar an East India Company settler. Upon his death in 1810 Tesselaar left the land he had acquired to the people he had enslaved. Berene Sauls is one of their direct descendants and was born in the village. After spending 15 years in the wine business at the highly esteemed Hamilton Russell Sauls – with assistance from Anthony Hamilton Russell and his team – launched Tesselaarsdal Wines in honour of her family’s heritage. (If you look closely at the label you can see Berene and her grandmother crossing the hills in the background.) As a Black- and female-owned winery Tesselaarsdal Wines represents refreshing diversity within the industry and the wines are out of this world…

Master of Wine Greg Sherwood is a highly respected voice when it comes to South African wine. In his words: “Of all the new start up wineries in South Africa over the past three or four years one of my favourites has got to be Berene Saul’s Tesselaarsdal winery.” He goes on to note that: “After five superb vintages of Pinot Noir Tesselaarsdal prepares to release their maiden Chardonnay 2019.”

And this is that very Chardonnay. Partly aged in amphora and partly in old French oak barriques it’s graceful elegant and dazzles with a diamond-like clarity. Almost Chablis-esque it offers lemongrass citrus blossom lemon meringue pie crunchy green apple vanilla sea salt and notes of freshly baked bread buttered and drizzled with honey.

Already awarded 92 points by Tim Atkin MW this is quite the debut. But be warned Greg Sherwood MW noted: “Watch out for this new white addition to the Tesselaarsdal range as this wine is likely to sell out as quickly as its Pinot Noir sibling.”
