Caroni is the Karuizawa of the rum world. Trinidad was once home to over fifty distilleries now only Angostura remains. Established in 1918 Caroni was famed for supplying the British Navy with full-bodied and full-throttle rums made using its own Trinidadian sugar cane. However it was sadly closed in 2002 and then demolished. The heavy rums that were saved are now top of the bucket list for collectors.

Luckily That Boutique-y Rum Company got their hands on a few casks of what little rum remains from this legendary distillery. Batch 8 of this forever dwindling 24 Year Old pulses with hot tarmac fig roll cherry cola walnut lapsang souchong Scotch-like peat dark chocolate caramel Medjool dates dried pineapple raisin chewed pencils engine oil burning car tyre rubber and tamarind. It’s a phenomenally complex tot that will appeal to Islay whisky lovers. Distilled in 1997 at the highly desirable HTR (Heavy Trinidad Rum) marque this exceptional rum was shipped to the UK in around 2009. In 2017 it was refilled into a recycled rum cask and then bottled at a punchy 61.5% a few years later. The handful of bottles we’ve been able to secure offer a great value glimpse into a disappearing icon but that means they won’t hang around for long.

Scotch fans will already be well aware of That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s work. The rum spin-off That Boutique-y Rum Company is an independent bottler who source the finest rums from the greatest distilleries and add their own unique twist to them along with distinctive comic book style labels.
