Featured in 101 Whiskies To Try Before You Die author Ian Buxton says: “Try any you can find. There are other Japanese whiskies listed here but this one is a favourite and a great introduction to whole other world of whisky.”
Produced at Suntory’s historic Yamazaki distillery this is a flagship Japanese Single Malt Whisky renowned for its multi-layered flavour profile and unique aroma. The Yamazaki 12 Year Old first appeared over here in the mid-1980s and was the first Japanese Single Malt Whisky to seriously pushed. Since that time this legendary release has steadily built a cult following and today is increasingly in demand – not to mention difficult to find. Intense confident yet elegant in style this captivating whisky suggests aromas of dried fruit nuts blossom peanut oil raspberry pavlova kaffir lime leaf barley sugar and honey whilst the palate is smooth soft and flavoursome with a host of mouth-watering exotic and tropical notes set against a core of savoury oak. Lengthy and broad on the finish with characteristic class and balance.
Yamazaki is the oldest distiller in Japan the brand is now famed throughout the world and it’s the Japanese people’s favourite Single Malt. This is where it all began for Japanese whisky. Established by Shinjiro Torii in the early-1920s just outside Kyoto the distillery uses the same waters that are used in for the finest tea ceremonies in the region. As Japanese distilleries don’t really swap liquid with each other as the Scots do Yamazaki has stills of all different shapes and sizes so they can create a mindboggling array of whiskies and huge complexity.
