A Pinot Noir to die for?

Dial P for Pinot was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s decision to hide weapons-grade uranium in a bottle of 1934 Pommard as part of his 1946 film Notorious. The Liberator is also a big fan of the Côte d’Or style and loves a bit of intrigue too. So he created a limited-edition Pinot Noir in homage. The grapes come from a plot in Simonsberg-Paarl owned by the highly respected Glen Carlou winery. Only 1 200 bottles were filled and we promise that there’s nothing radioactive in any of them. Just a juicy and silky red full of complex plot twists.

In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 movie Rear Window Grace Kelly pours James Stewart a glass of wine to go with his lobster and whispers “It’s a Montrachet.” When the classic black and white film was retouched by the clever folk at Technicolour that white wine miraculously became red. What happened and what colour the original wine was are both mysteries. But hopefully it gives you something to mull over as you sip this new wine from The Liberator. Maybe with a Hitchcock film?

As a panel taster for South African Wine Magazine a contributor to the highly respected Platter’s South African Wines Guide and a certified Master of Wine Richard Kelley is one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the world. Over three decades in the industry this Cape Crusader has made a lot of friends throughout that great winemaking nation. Every time he visits the Cape he pops in to see his buddies and rummage through their cellars uncovering great wines that don’t quite fit in the winery’s portfolio are deemed too experimental or that they plan to simply fill into big blends. On discovering these gems Richard – going by his alter ego Rick – ‘liberates’ them bottles them and sells them under the small-batch label The Liberator. Each one is completely unique and when it’s gone it’s unlikely to ever be repeated.
