This is your evening sorted: an exceptional bottle of Shiraz with a short story on the label. Pour yourself a glass and settle back on the sofa to read it. Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin.
This Aussie Shiraz was grown in a cool climate giving it a decidedly European Syrah feel. Fermented with wild yeasts and bottled unfiltered and unfined making it vegan-friendly it received a very respectable 93 points from American wine critic James Suckling but we’d give it more. If you consider Grampians Shiraz to be a story the first chapter is all about pepper. Then the author begins to develop the characters blackberry black cherry and bramble. They’re a youthful bunch; bright and easy to love. Then it takes a dark turn into dark chocolate. We don’t want to give too much away about the ending but suffice to say it’s satisfying and refreshingly different.
Imagine that you set up a winery that doesn’t own any vines you simply they use grapes from sourced from small vineyards in Grampians and Henty. You’re located in a rather nondescript suburb of Melbourne without any neighbouring landmarks like creeks valleys or mountains. You set up in 2003 and your family never made wine because they were all architects so don’t have a long illustrious history. What do you call your winery? Well your story is the wines themselves the vintage variations the new labels the new blends and the experimentation. That’s how The Story Wines got its name. Now you can be part of winemaker Rory Lane’s story by pouring yourself a glass of his outstanding Shiraz.
