Thistle do nicely…

We’re super excited to have secured a small parcel of the rare wines produced by Thistledown in McLaren Vale. Thistledown Wines are rated as a five-star winery by James Halliday’s Wine Companion and one of the ‘Top Wineries’ in Australia by The Real Review. The wines are made in small batches by two Masters of Wine Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan so the quality was always going to be exceptional. Throw in a little support from Peter Leske a consultant who has worked at Nepenthe Grosset and Domaine Dujac and you know you’re about to open something special.

The previous vintage of this “luscious Shiraz” was flagged by Jancis Robinson as ‘VGV’ meaning ‘very good value’ with her declaring “Yes indeed – this is gorgeous!” So demand is sure to be high for this new release.

Gorgeous Shiraz was crafted using Shiraz from one old vineyard in the Riverland plus a splash of the white grape Zibibbo a.k.a. Muscat. Think of it as a vegan-friendly Australian take on Côte-Rôtie. Not your average Shiraz this displays notes of peach and nectarine on the nose followed by raspberry strawberry blackberry and peppery spice on the soft and silky palate. This will be lots of fun with a barbeque or Sunday roast. And it’s not just Harvey Nichols that has fallen in love with this wine. The respected critic Matthew Jukes named it his ‘Wine of the Week’ back in April describing it as follows:

“The Shiraz or Syrah grape variety is equally at home flying solo or being used as a component in a blend. In this instance it dominates the partnership in this thrilling wine by taking up 86% of this bottle and the remaining proportion is a rather unlikely 14% Zibibbo or Muscat.  I have never tasted a Shiraz/Zibibbo blend before and it occurs to me that the name Gorgeous is entirely apt here.  This is a wine that majors on fresh pick-your-own berry fruit notes drawn from a single vineyard of old-vine Shiraz that has been growing grapes since the early soldier settlements over a century ago.  While the Shiraz is deeply fruit-driven the Zibibbo adds lustre and gloss a little like those wines that employ Viognier to do a similar but perhaps more perfumed task. While some find Shiraz/Viognier blends a little heady and fulsome I doubt they would have a problem here because this white grape addition augments the silkiness and slipperiness of this delicious wine. With only 13.5% alcohol on board there is a freshness here too that lifts the finish and completes the picture.”
