Thistle do nicely…

We’re super excited to have secured a small parcel of the rare wines produced by Thistledown in McLaren Vale. Thistledown Wines are rated as a five-star winery by James Halliday’s Wine Companion and one of the ‘Top Wineries’ in Australia by The Real Review. The wines are made in small batches by two Masters of Wine Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan so the quality was always going to be exceptional. Throw in a little support from Peter Leske a consultant who has worked at Nepenthe Grosset and Domaine Dujac and you know you’re about to open something special.

The previous vintage of this wine won “Best Grenache in Australia” in James Halliday’s Wine Companion and sold out rapidly. So the new vintage has been eagerly awaited and it doesn’t disappoint. Sands of Time Old Vine Single Vineyard Grenache comes from dry-grown bush vines in Blewitt Springs. The vineyard is Sue Trott’s 75-year-old Home Block which has sandy soils hence the name. This vegan-friendly wine has immense power and a dazzling brightness and clarity almost like peering down a kaleidoscope. It feels almost like a Pinot Noir with its intense notes of sandalwood cherry wild strawberry plum rosehip dried orange peel wood spice Mediterranean herbs and gentle mushroomy umami-ness. But don’t just take our word for it the experts at James Halliday’s Wine Companion say they “adore this estate’s obsession with Grenache” and just read the other glowing reviews from the critics…

96 points “Sourced from the old sandy Blewitt Springs Home Block of Sue Trott. Fermented wild with attenuated maceration in eggs and the inclusion of 30% whole bunches imparting turmeric sandalwood cardamon scents and finely wrought granular tannins akin to Nebbiolo. Real pinosity and sap to this. Succulent notes of kirsch fecund strawberry and anise. A parry of tension and thrust of gentle sweetness. Remarkable freshness. A wine that places domestic Grenache among the world’s best.” – Ned Goodwin MW

95+ points “Very old vines in Blewitt Springs. Cherry sage and dried roses spicy biscuits with a subtle earthy character. Ripe intense red fruit and cherry flavour sprinkled with dried herbs almost gravelly tannin fresh acidity a fair amount of mouth-perfume and a spicy poached strawberry finish of excellent length. Outstanding.” – Gary Walsh The Wine Front
