One of the world’s finest and most unassuming white wines. Imagine a hybrid of Grand Cru Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet with a twist of unapologetic Italian style; that’s Azienda Agricoal Tiberio’s Fonte Canale. One of those wines that’s constantly evolving in the glass and challenging the senses one moment silky and voluptuous and the next angular and buzzing with energy like a live wire. Expect lemon curd wildflower meadows dried apricot crunchy peach tropical mango elements chalk sea-lashed pebble beaches deep complexity and laser-like acidity. Simply phenomenal.
More than two decades ago Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of roughly 60-year-old Trebbiano Abruzzese vines in Cugnoli nestled beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains on the slops that roll down to the Adriatic Sea. So mesmerised by this rare find he bought the eight-hectare plot and more to grow the estate changing his family’s future forever. Those vines are now 80 years old and have been passed to Riccardo’s children Cristiana and Antonio. Described by Decanter as “one of Italy’s rising stars” their vegan-friendly Fonte Canale is now considered one of Italy’s finest wines often drawing comparison with Grand Cru Burgundy and famed for its longevity. This vintage for example could be saved until well into the 2030s.
