94 points, “Savoury berries and dried blackberries on the nose, together with oranges, dark chocolate and dry earth. Full-bodied and fine-grained palate, with a tight structure and fantastic balance, which indicates good aging potential. Long and savoury, yet reserved. A textbook Amarone with freshness, savouriness and concentration. Drinkable now, but better to give it some time. Try in 2024 or later.” – James Suckling

Tommasi’s ever-reliable Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico is another beauty in 2018.

The grapes were dried for four months, intensifying and concentrating the juice. The wine has been aged in large oak barrels from Slavonia in Croatia for three years, adding layer upon layer of subtle spice and an unbelievable smoothness for a wine so heavy and rich. It’s densely packed with dark chocolate, earthy mushroom, forest floor, blackberry, prune, damson, dried cherry, freshly ground coffee, burnt orange, wild herb, black pepper, violet and rose flavours. A wonderful wine to carry over from main course to cheese board; we recommend starting with wild boar, venison or hare, and then moving on to the most potent of cheeses.

The glamorous Tommasi estate sits within a sprawling patchwork of vineyards, but the grapes for this wine come from the prestigious hills of La Groletta and Conca d’Oro. For four generations and well over a century, this family has specialised in creating what they call “divine nectar”. Their hard-earned reputation has elevated them to become one of the ambassadors for the entire region and one of the most recognisable Amarone wines in existence.
