With a history traceable back to the 1500s, Château La Tour de By is one of the Médoc’s oldest estates. Located at the northern extreme of the appellation, next to the Gironde estuary, it enjoys one of the Left Bank’s highest elevations and possesses seriously old vines, some of which are centenarians. Described by Hugh Johnson as an “extremely successful estate with a high reputation for enjoyable and durable wines”, the château is named after the rocket-shaped tower that sits at the heart of 94-hectare grounds, next to a mighty cedar planted in 1865. In this too-often-overlooked vintage they produced an absolutely classic Claret that’s possibly one of their best ever; a mix of Chambord and cassis fruitiness, prominent oak, tobacco, woody herbs, earthy spices and a gentle waft of fireplaces. Everyday drinkers like this from the 2014 vintage are now few are far between, so don’t miss out. Serve with rare beef, roast lamb, bourguignon, stroganoff or goulash.
