92+ points “From the south and south-east facing Ribeauvillé grands crus Geisberg and Osterberg with low-yielding vines averaging 45 years old the 2013 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile displays a deep complex and very elegant bouquet of ripe rather tropical fruit aromas along with some floral flavours. Full-bodied juicy round and elegant on the palate this mineral-laced and well-structured wine indicates a firm but ripe acidity and a lingering salinity as well as an impressively pure and mineral length. Powerful and with great aging potential. Drink now to 2035.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Unquestionably one of the greatest names in Alsace the Trimbach family has been involved in making wine since 1626. Based in the picturesque gingerbread town of Ribeauvillé they have built an enviable reputation for the quality of their entire range over 13 generations. The dry Trimbach style is one geared up for gastronomy buzzing with tension and able to age with grace and finesse making it the sommelier’s choice.

Cuvée Frédéric Emile Riesling comes from 45-year-old vines in the Grand Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg that overlook the Trimbach winery (although the family made the decision not to mention the Grand Cru status on the label back in the 1970s). ‘CFE’ as it’s lovingly known sets the benchmark for Alsace Riesling and is named after Frédéric Emile who set the standard the family have maintained for over 100 years. Capable of maturing for two decades or more this is Riesling at its finest. The tropical fruit lemongrass lime green apple herbs and blossom of its youth are gradually giving way to tertiary notes of marmalade quince poached pear cinnamon beeswax and fleshy peach but this long-lived wine is still a little way off the petrol and nuttiness stage. It’s definitely a wine that you’re going to want to pull the cookbooks out for consider pairing with white fish caviar fatty meats exotic curries spicy quinoa salads and lime-doused tacos.
