Finding extra-old Rhum Agricole from Martinique is a rare and wonderful thing. Rivalling Single Malts and Cognacs more than twice its age this 12 Year Old rum has been matured in ex-Bourbon barrels deep in Trois Rivières’ tropical island cellars. The warmth speeds up the ageing process far beyond anything imaginable in Europe building layer upon layer of rich brown sugar charred orange treacle tart almond croissants barbeque coals marmalade blackcurrant jam plum crumble floral honey tobacco Biscoff and freshly ground coffee. It’s truly exquisite stuff that we recommend taking your time over it.

Highly aromatic agricole rhum is crafted by distilling fermented cane juice predominantly in the French West Indies Guadalupe and Martinique. The rum from Martinique is renowned for its immense quality so much so that in 1996 it was awarded the prestigious French “appellation d'origine contrôlée” – putting it on a level with some of the world’s greatest wines. And the finest produced on the island must be those of Trois Rivières.

Trois Rivières is named after the waterways – Bois d'Inde Oman and St. Pierre – that encircled the original estate established by Nicolas Fouquet The Superintendent of King Louis XIV in 1660. The terroir here in the far south of the island has magnesium-rich clay soils and lots of sea water creating rums of distinction and a touch of the maritime. Their AOC Rhum de la Martinique is created by fermenting cane juice in open vats using indigenous yeasts. Once it hits roughly the ABV of beer it’s distilled in a Creole Column Still and then aged under the watchful eye of Cellar Master Daniel Baudin. As Al Green almost sang take me to three rivers.
