98 points, “These especially concentrated clusters of Merlot have produced an ambitious wine of soaring intensity and lasting power. The bouquet reveals pressed blackberry and cherry liqueur with spice, leather and cured tobacco. The wine is explosive and opulent, and it will surely deliver lots of pleasure and comfort to the few of us lucky enough to taste it.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is an extra-special expression of Tua Rita’s legendary Redigaffi.

Redigaffi 7 has only been created in two vintages so far, 2013 and now 2018. Just 411 magnums were made of Redigaffi 7 2018, making this an exceedingly rare find.

Redigaffi 7 comes from 2,700 Merlot vines that were planted in 1988. The site is known as Plot 7, hence the name. What makes Plot 7 so intriguing is that the clone used has never been fully identified, but it produces especially concentrated clusters of grapes. The result is still very much Redigaffi, but it’s a kind of super-charged version with more power, firmer tannins and the additional complexity of tar, campfire smoke and intense fruit. Aged for three years in more highly toasted French oak than the standard Redigaffi; your wine cellar needs this magnum of Redigaffi 7.

Rita Tua and her late husband bought their property in Suvereto, just south of Bolgheri in the province of Livorno in the early-1980s. They planted vineyards of Bordeaux varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in Colline Metallifere (Upper Maremma) and released their first boutique ‘garage wines’ about a decade later. But Tua Rita really burst on to the fine wine scene when their Redigaffi 2000 became the first ever Italian wine to receive a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker.

Overnight, Tua Rita became one of the spearheads of a new wave of cult Super Tuscans. But this isn’t a glamorous château-style property, it’s a rural family home that has earnt its reputation based on hard graft and attention to detail. Now, run by Rita’s daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla, it remains one of the pioneering gems of the Tuscan coast.
