Leflaive is a name already synonymous with the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Burgundy. So when Olivier Leflaive expanded his empire into Champagne it instantly became one of the most exciting new players in the region. Champagne Valentin Leflaive (named after Olivier’s son) couples a modern and transparent approach that will appeal to those of us with geeky tendencies with the kind of provenance reputation and expertise that are sure to pique the interest of true connoisseurs.

Champagne Valetin Leflaive’s vegan-friendly wines are given codes rather than names. These indicate the year and origin of the base and also the dosage (the sweetness added to balance the Champagne). So Brut Rosé MA 16 60 is a rosé based on wines (51% Pinot Noir and 49% Chardonnay) harvested in the 2016 vintage (16) from the Grand Cru of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (M) and the Grand Cru of Ambonnay (A) then finished with a dosage of 6.0g/l (60). It was disgorged late in 2020 following three years (three times longer than required by law for a non-vintage Champagne) ageing on the lees (the spent yeast that gives top sparkling wine its bready and nutty flavour profile). The result is a thrilling Grand Cru rosé that seems to kiss the taste buds with notes of raspberry wild strawberry redcurrant baguette almond croissant and sea breezes. A masterclass in freshness and finesse that should not be missed.

Olivier Leflaive is part of one of Burgundy’s most iconic dynasties. He co-ran Domaine Leflaive for over a decade including four years in collaboration with his cousin the late great Anne-Claude. Having set up a successful négociant business on the side Olivier decided in 1994 to spread his wings and pursue his own venture. With that name fine Burgundy running in his blood and the help of sensational winemakers like Jean-Marc Boillot (grandson of Etienne Sauzet) and Franck Grux (previously at Domaine Roulot) Olivier Leflaive’s enterprise was assured stardom. The business owns around 15 hectares of vineyards in prime locations such as Puligny-Montrachet Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet and famously their wine was chosen by the British royal family to be served at the wedding of Ms Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Valentin Leflaive is one of the family’s more recent ventures and since its inception in 2015 the esteemed winemaking team – lead by Christophe Pitois – has already garnered high plaudits.
