According to Champagne expert Richard Juhlin the Fourny family “make delicious Champagnes from their 6.5 hectares. Organic farming old vines and oak barrels are the keys to their rapid success.” That and of course that the family are fifth generation Champagne producers who create sparkling wine as if it were haute couture. Famed for their little or no dosage style their Champagnes are for those who prefer them dry. But it’s their use of oak that makes them some of the most exciting in the region.
The Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs is a perfect case in point; tasting something like a sparkling Puligny-Montrachet. With most of the grapes handpicked in the famous village of Vertus it’s rich and creamy with zingy lemon and green apple plus a moreish saline sea spray freshness. Forget needing a celebration to open Champagne this is Champagne worth celebrating in its own right.
